VectorCraft — Open-Source Illustrator Alternative (Free, Rust)

Who this is for: Illustrators, logo designers and UI/vector workers who want the Illustrator workflow without the subscription — and value speed and scriptability.

Open-source Illustrator replacement in pure Rust: Pen, Pathfinder, smart guides, appearance, layers — fast, scriptable, free.

Quick answer: VectorCraft is a free, open-source, pure-Rust reimplementation of the Adobe Illustrator workflow: Pen, Pathfinder, smart guides, appearance and layers, with exact booleans and unlimited undo. Downloads from getartcraft.com; SVG/PDF (.ai) import and export included. It is alpha — great for vector work, not yet a full daily Illustrator replacement.

Official source — VectorCraft

getartcraft.com → the app's page → Download for desktop (Windows build)

  1. Download the Windows build from getartcraft.com (official source only).
  2. Run the installer or unzip the package — it is a native Rust binary, no runtime required.
  3. Open the app, create a document or open a real file (e.g. .psd in PhotoCraft, .svg in VectorCraft).
  4. No account, no signup, no subscription — the family has none.

GPU compositing runs through wgpu (DX12/Vulkan). A GPU with a supported driver helps; it is not mandatory.

Does your computer have a dedicated GPU (or a recent integrated GPU with Vulkan/Metal/DX12 drivers)?
Do you need to work offline most of the time?

Based on the project's stated rendering stack (wgpu: Metal/Vulkan/DX12/WebGPU; WASM browser builds). The project publishes no hard minimum specs.

The Illustrator workflow, recreated

VectorCraft is an open-source, clean-room take on the Adobe Illustrator workflow, rebuilt in pure Rust. The interface — layout, tools, menus, panels and shortcuts — is familiar to Illustrator users: Pen, Pathfinder, Smart Guides, Appearance and Layers are all there.

Performance is the headline: multi-threaded SIMD rendering draws 20,000 shapes in about 27ms and holds 120 fps in the UI. Boolean operations on curves are exact (no 'cannot perform operation' dead ends), undo is unlimited, and property-tested file round-tripping keeps documents stable across versions.

It is open by design: a native .vectorcraft JSON format, SVG and PDF (including PDF-compatible .ai files) import and export, plus PNG/JPEG/WebP export. Every menu, tool gesture, panel and dialog can also be driven through a JSON control channel and MCP server, making it agent-native.

Key facts at a glance

  • Familiar Illustrator layout: Pen, Pathfinder, Smart Guides, Appearance, Layers and shortcuts
  • Fast: multi-threaded SIMD rendering — 20,000 shapes in ~27ms, 120 fps UI
  • Robust: exact curve booleans, unlimited undo, property-tested file round-trip
  • Open formats: native .vectorcraft JSON, SVG/PDF (.ai compatible) import/export, PNG/JPEG/WebP export
  • Agent-native: JSON control channel and MCP server drive every menu, tool, panel and dialog
Status: Alpha (2026-10-10 per README). GitHub stars: 8.0k (2026-10-13). License: open source (MIT/Apache-2.0).

Quick start — first five minutes

  1. Download VectorCraft from getartcraft.com (macOS, Windows, Linux) or run the browser build — free, no subscription.
  2. Create a new document and draw with the Pen tool — the path workflow matches Illustrator's.
  3. Combine shapes with Pathfinder operations (exact booleans, unlimited undo).
  4. Import an existing .ai (PDF-compatible), .svg or .vectorcraft file and edit it.
  5. Export to SVG, PDF, PNG, JPEG or WebP; drive the same operations from a script or AI agent via the JSON channel / MCP server.

Common uses

  • Logo and icon work with the Illustrator-style Pen and Pathfinder workflow
  • Open and edit .ai and .svg files without a Creative Cloud subscription
  • Render very large documents (20,000+ shapes) without UI lag
  • Automate vector exports from scripts or AI agents
  • Learn vector illustration on a free tool that keeps the industry-standard shortcuts

Why the speed matters

Vector documents get large fast — a packaging dieline, a city map, a font's outline pass. Illustrator's UI degrades as shapes multiply; VectorCraft's SIMD renderer was built so 20,000 shapes still draw at interactive speed. That is the difference users notice first, before any feature list.

Open formats, not lock-in

The native format is readable JSON (.vectorcraft), so documents diff in version control and are never trapped in a binary. SVG and PDF (including PDF-compatible .ai files) import and export natively, and PNG/JPEG/WebP cover raster export. If you already live in Git, vector files become reviewable artifacts.

Honest gaps

VectorCraft is alpha (README dated 2026-10-10). Not everything an Illustrator professional uses daily is there yet — check the project's own status notes before migrating client-critical files, and keep backups: the app is honest that it is not a full replacement today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is VectorCraft free?
Yes — open source, no subscription, no paid tier. This guide site is independent of the project.
Does it open Adobe Illustrator files?
It imports SVG and PDF including PDF-compatible .ai files, and exports the same set plus PNG/JPEG/WebP. True .ai round-trips depend on the .ai being PDF-based, which is the standard for modern Illustrator exports.
How is VectorCraft different from Inkscape?
VectorCraft targets the Illustrator workflow specifically — same panels, tools and shortcuts — and is built for performance and agent-native automation (JSON channel + MCP). Inkscape is a mature, established option with its own strengths; try both and keep whichever fits your hand.
Can I automate vector work?
Yes. Every menu, tool gesture, panel and dialog is exposed through a JSON control channel and an MCP server, so scripts and AI agents can produce or edit vector documents.
